3M Launches 3M™ Tegaderm™ Matrix Dressing with PHI™ technology

November 17, 2008 11:32 AM Eastern Time

- New technology with naturally occurring cations helps promote balance needed for chronic wound healing -

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3M Health Care, a worldwide leader in health care products that address wound healing, today announced the launch of 3M™ Tegaderm™ Matrix Dressing with PHI™ technology, the first wound dressing in a platform of products from 3M that uses innovative PHI™ technology. The dressing is indicated for use with chronic, non-infected wounds, including: diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers (stages II-IV) and venous stasis ulcers and has demonstrated favorable results on hard-to-heal wounds.

“Wound healing can be a long, complex process and can easily become stalled,” said Steve Fletcher, Global Business Manager for Advanced Wound Care, 3M Skin and Wound Care Division. “Because PHI™ technology’s unique formulation helps balance the wound environment, Tegaderm™ Matrix dressing can help advance healing, enabling the wound to progress through the normal healing cascade. This may help save healthcare costs and contribute to better patient outcomes.”

The new dressing from the Tegaderm™ family is comfortable, safe and easy to use. Its unique formulation creates a favorable, moist wound environment that does not harm the patient’s skin, affect tissue integrity or cause maceration. The simple design of the dressing allows the patient to easily apply and remove Tegaderm™ Matrix dressing once out of the wound clinic, helping to increase patient compliance.

What is PHI™ technology?

PHI™ technology consists of a unique blend of cations found naturally in the body, including: potassium, zinc, calcium and rubidium. The technology responds to body temperature and promotes a natural moisture balance to help chronic wounds progress toward healing. PHI™ technology is a novel approach to jump-starting stalled wounds.

In vitro studies showed that the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) is decreased with increasing amounts of PHI™ technology surrounding the cells. This is important because in chronic wounds, an imbalance in the production of MMPs and their natural inhibitors (TIMPs) has been shown to slow down the healing process. Along with reduced activity of MMPs in chronic wound fluid, PHI™ technology may aid in rebalancing the wound environment.
